For the full comparison, sponsor, cost, transfer rules, family sponsorship, see our Dubai Work Visa vs Free Zone Visa guide. Here’s the quick version if you just need to decide.
Choose a mainland work visa if
- You’re an employee joining an established company that operates across the UAE, not just one zone.
- Your employer is covering visa costs, since sponsorship typically costs the employee less directly than a free zone setup does.
- You want recognition across all UAE government bodies without any zone restriction.
Choose a free zone visa if
- You’re a founder, freelancer or investor wanting full ownership of your own company.
- You want a faster, more self-contained setup process through a single free zone authority.
- Your work is genuinely contained within that zone’s licensed activities, not spread across mainland clients.
Family sponsorship works the same way under either visa type. The official u.ae rule is a salary of AED 4,000/month (or AED 3,000 + accommodation), and some guides report a higher bar for women sponsors that u.ae does not publish. See our family sponsorship guide for the full rules.
