Residents, business owners, and transport operators across the UAE now have an official path to satellite broadband following a major regulatory approval. The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority has issued a General Space Services Licence to Starlink, opening satellite internet directly to individual consumers alongside commercial and public entities nationwide.
Dedicated Space Broadband Opens Up for Homes, Ships, and Aircraft
The newly granted approval authorizes Starlink to establish, operate, and manage a public satellite communications network across the Emirates for a ten-year period. While standard internet in local neighborhoods relies on ground-based fiber networks, this satellite framework establishes a direct alternative operating on land, at sea, and in the air.
For daily routines, the regulatory shift expands how residents and institutions handle their primary and backup connections. The changes authorized under the new ten-year framework center on three practical areas:
- Residential and Commercial Access: Households and local businesses fall within the licence scope, allowing individual consumers to access satellite broadband services alongside corporate offices and government departments.
- Mobility on Water and in the Air: The licence explicitly covers connectivity-on-the-move, enabling satellite internet services for both the maritime and aviation sectors operating within national bounds.
