Royal Sister Princess Astrid Passes Away Days After Brother's Funeral
Norway’s Princess Astrid died on Friday at the age of 94, the royal palace announced in an official statement from Oslo. Her passing marks the loss of another central figure for the Norwegian public and royal observers, occurring just weeks after the death of her younger brother, King Harald V.
Final Public Appearance Came at Royal Funeral Days Before Death
Princess Astrid made her final public appearance on Wednesday at the funeral of King Harald, who died last month at age 89 after reigning for more than 35 years.
“Throughout her long life, Princess Astrid represented the Royal House in a warm and dutiful manner,” King Haakon VIII said in the palace statement.
The princess, who was married as Mrs Ferner, carried out official representation for the royal family across several decades, including public engagements such as Dyslexia Norway‘s 50th anniversary event at Oslo City Hall in May 2026. Her death comes as the monarchy transitions following the succession of King Harald’s 53-year-old son to the throne.
