Anthropic Logs $80.7B H1 Loss on Convertible Bond Valuation
Anthropic recorded a net loss of $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026, marking a severe widening from the $13 billion loss registered during the same period a year earlier. According to a draft S-1 prospectus reviewed by Reuters, the San Francisco-based artificial intelligence company is heading toward a planned initial public offering in November while institutional investors reassess its market valuation around $1.5 trillion.
Behind the headline figure lies a major accounting mechanism rather than pure operational cash burn. The financial documents show that $72 billion of the first-half loss stems directly from a fair-value adjustment on bonds convertible into company shares, reflecting an increase in estimated bond value rather than cash outlays. Even so, underlying capital intensity remains immense. Anthropic spent nearly $9 billion on computing capacity and infrastructure in the first half of the year, scaling up sharply from $2.3 billion in the prior-year period. The firm has committed to spending at least $518 billion over a decade on cloud services, computing, and infrastructure.
Commercial expansion continues to move at pace, though questions regarding growth velocity remain. At an investor meeting on October 14, company leadership reported that third-quarter revenue jumped 45% to $16.8 billion from the previous quarter, according to individuals familiar with the proceedings. While those figures mitigate some concerns over the massive capital required to build advanced AI systems, certain backers noted a slowing sequential growth rate. Anthropic did not respond to a Reuters request for comment regarding the disclosures.
