London Google Cloud Outage Knocks Out Revolut and UK Banks
A service disruption at Google Cloud‘s London data center on Tuesday knocked out websites and mobile applications for several banks, financial firms, and public service providers across the region. British digital banking users and financial institutions faced widespread service interruptions as core cloud infrastructure faltered.
Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies Over Critical Tech Infrastructure Reliance
Revolut‘s status page confirmed that card payments and ATM withdrawals were unavailable or partially functioning during the disruption at Alphabet’s cloud operations. The technical failure at the europe-west2 data center, which primarily serves customers in the UK and Ireland, left account holders unable to execute routine transactions while engineering teams investigated the fault.
The incident arrives after the UK designated Google Cloud EMEA Limited as a critical third-party supplier for its financial sector in July, placing the cloud-computing provider under direct regulatory oversight following years of mounting concern across European markets. European regulators have grown increasingly worried about the financial industry’s reliance on external technology providers that support critical banking operations, mirroring similar EU actions designating 19 technology companies as critical computing providers last year.
