Magnitude 7 Earthquake Strikes Northern Tibet at Shallow 10km Depth
A magnitude 7 earthquake struck northern Tibet at approximately 10:33 p.m. local time on Thursday, sending seismic waves through remote high-altitude communities across Nagqu county.
Seismic Monitoring Detects Shallow Tremor in Nagqu County
The China Earthquake Networks Center recorded the epicenter in Nagqu at a depth of 10 kilometers. A shallow focal depth concentrates kinetic energy near the surface, typically heightening the severity of ground movement across affected mountain districts.
The event follows earlier regional activity along the western Xizang-India border region, where automated tracking systems recorded a magnitude 5.1 quake.
