Northern Beaches Closed After Tanker UAE Oil Spill Triggers Odours
Along the coastlines of Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah’s Al Hamriyah Beach, and Ras Al Khaimah, residents spent days catching a sharp, fuel-like scent in the air before authorities confirmed its source offshore.
Coastlines and Fishing Routes Face Sudden Restrictions
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) confirmed that a tanker oil spill was detected off Umm Al Quwain, triggering immediate containment and remediation work. All coastal areas and beaches across Umm Al Quwain are temporarily closed while technical teams run assessments.
In neighbouring Sharjah, Al Hamriyah Beach was shut down as a precaution against drifting pollution. Meanwhile, the Ras Al Khaimah Public Services Department closed all local beaches until further notice.
Fishing and marine activities in the affected zones have ground to a halt. MOCCAE urged all sea users and local fishermen to steer clear of impacted waters and follow municipal instructions. Fieldwork to protect marine life remains ongoing, and officials have advised residents to rely on official updates rather than unverified rumors while cleanup operations continue.
MOCCAE stated that containment, cordoning, and cleanup efforts began immediately upon detection of the spill.
