White House press corps faces relocation threat from Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump confirmed on Saturday that he is considering moving the White House press corps out of its current workspace inside the executive mansion to an unspecified alternative site. The potential move directly impacts news organizations and political correspondents who cover daily presidential administration briefings from within the West Wing.
Briefing room relocation proposal follows executive tensions with media access
Trump addressed the issue in a social media post where he dismissed reports claiming he intended to demolish the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room to restore a historic presidential swimming pool, calling that specific proposal “a stupid thing.” However, he explicitly raised the prospect of relocating correspondents, stating he may move media organizations to a “less obnoxious location.”
The statement follows a report indicating Trump had previously urged then-press secretary Karoline Leavitt in August to relocate briefings away from the current room. The briefing room site originally housed an indoor pool installed during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency before the Nixon administration converted the space for the press corps.
The move comes amid ongoing legal battles over press access at the White House. The administration briefly banned journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from White House grounds before a federal judge ordered their access restored after finding the exclusion likely unconstitutional, a decision the administration continues to contest in court.
