Once you’ve checked your eligibility route and how to apply, the real question is what the visa actually gets you, and what it costs against a standard residence visa. This guide separates confirmed UAE Golden Visa benefits from claims repeated across marketing sites that don’t hold up against official sources.
Confirmed benefits (from u.ae)
- Long-term, renewable residency: 5 or 10 years depending on category, instead of the 2 to 3 years typical of standard residence visas.
- No sponsor needed: unlike an employment visa, your residency isn’t tied to an employer, so losing a job doesn’t put your visa at risk.
- No 6-month absence limit: standard UAE residence visas can lapse if you’re outside the country too long; Golden Visa holders aren’t bound by that rule.
- Family sponsorship: you can sponsor a spouse and children under the visa.
Claims you’ll see repeated, but that aren’t Golden Visa–specific
Search for “Golden Visa benefits” and you’ll find long lists claiming VIP airport lounges, discounted mortgages, an Esaad discount card, easier driving licence conversion, and 100% business ownership as exclusive perks of the visa. We could not confirm any of these on u.ae, ICP, or GDRFA Dubai. Two are worth correcting specifically, because they’re stated as fact almost everywhere:
- 100% business ownership is UAE company law, not a Golden Visa benefit. Since the 2021 Commercial Companies Law reforms, most mainland business activities allow full foreign ownership for any investor, regardless of visa type. A Golden Visa doesn’t change your ownership rights.
- Healthcare and school access come with UAE residency generally, not the Golden Visa specifically — every resident needs mandatory health insurance and can enrol children in UAE schools, on any valid visa.
Some UAE banks do advertise Golden Visa–linked mortgage offers, and some services (like DXB’s premium lanes) are marketed toward Golden Visa holders commercially. These may be real commercial perks from individual banks or service providers, but they aren’t government-granted rights, and terms vary and change. Don’t rely on them when comparing the Golden Visa’s real value against a standard residence visa — the confirmed list above is what the visa itself guarantees.
What it actually costs
The residence permit fee itself (not counting the investment, business or salary threshold your category requires) runs to roughly AED 1,640 through GDRFA Dubai — see our application guide for the full fee breakdown and what it doesn’t include (nomination fees, medical testing, Emirates ID). Compare that to a standard 2 or 3-year employment residence visa, which typically costs less upfront but needs renewing every 2 to 3 years, each time with its own fee, medical test and Emirates ID reissue — a cost that adds up over a 10-year horizon even before counting the time and paperwork of repeated renewals.
Where the Golden Visa clearly saves money over time is fewer renewal cycles and no employer-sponsorship fees if you change jobs or leave employment. Where it doesn’t necessarily save money is the entry threshold itself — the AED 2 million property or investment routes, or GDRFA Dubai’s AED 1 to 7 million entrepreneur income tiers, are a much higher bar than any standard visa requires.
Is it worth it?
For the salary route (AED 30,000+/month), the property route (AED 2 million+), or established entrepreneurs who already clear GDRFA Dubai’s income tiers, the Golden Visa is usually worth pursuing: the confirmed benefits (stability, no sponsor, travel flexibility, family sponsorship) are real and meaningfully better than a standard visa, for a modest permit fee. For someone who doesn’t already meet a route on their own merits, chasing marketing claims like “VIP lounges” or “exclusive mortgages” isn’t a reason to force an application through — those aren’t guaranteed, and the entry bar (investment, income or achievement) is the real cost, not the AED 1,640 permit fee.
