Claude Chats Exposed: How to Keep AI Conversations Private
If you’re one of the many users who have shared Claude AI conversations, you may be at risk of exposing sensitive information. Recently, it was discovered that publicly shared Claude conversations, as well as those from ChatGPT and Gemini, were appearing in Google Search results. This has raised concerns about the privacy and security of AI chat data.
To protect yourself, it’s essential to review every Claude chat you’ve shared. Open Claude, select your profile, and go to Settings > Privacy. Find Shared chats, select Manage, and review the list of conversations with active public links. If you find any chats that no longer need to be shared, select Unshare beside them. You can also open an individual conversation, select Share, change its visibility from Public to Private, and disable the link.
As a user, it’s crucial to be mindful of what you share and with whom. Avoid uploading sensitive information such as passwords, OTPs, private encryption keys, bank details, medical reports, confidential contracts, or unredacted identity documents. For UAE users, this also means avoiding passport copies, Emirates ID numbers, visa pages, and confidential workplace files. Replace names and account numbers with placeholders wherever possible, and always open shared links in a private browser window to review the content before sharing.
If you find that a chat has appeared on Google, act quickly to revoke the sharing link at its source. If the page has disappeared but remains visible in Google results, submit its URL through Google’s Refresh Outdated Content process.
Claude offers Incognito chats, accessed through the ghost icon when starting a conversation outside a project. These chats are not added to normal history or memory and are not used to improve Claude. ChatGPT‘s Temporary Chat mode also avoids chat history, memory, and model training, with OpenAI stating that Temporary Chats are automatically deleted from its systems after 30 days.

- Use Incognito chats or Temporary Chat modes when discussing sensitive topics.
- Avoid sharing sensitive information, and use placeholders for names and account numbers.
