Fraudsters are extracting thousands of dirhams from job candidates by setting up elaborate hiring processes using artificial intelligence, polished websites, and realistic interviews. While recruitment fraud warnings have circulated in the UAE for more than 15 years, scammers continuously refine their tactics to exploit job search urgency.
Victims are frequently targeted through social media job listings that lead to what looks like a structured corporate application. Job applicant Fatima Al Rahma reported encountering a job ad that initially appeared legitimate until she was asked for three separate payments of AED 2,000, totaling AED 6,000, supposedly covering registration, interview processing, and final recruitment steps. Scammers rely on financial pressure to push candidates into paying before they have time to investigate.
Why UAE Law Prohibits Recruitment Charges
MOHRE rules make it clear that charging job applicants any recruitment, administrative, or processing fee is illegal under UAE law. Authentic employers and licensed employment agencies carry full legal responsibility for funding their own hiring and onboarding costs.
Fraudsters attempt to side-step suspicion by framing upfront fees as administrative charges or processing deposits. They produce convincing documentation, using artificial intelligence tools to draft professional communication and placing fake corporate branding onto fake offer letters.
How to Verify an Offer and Guard Your Money
- Refuse all fee requests. If a hiring manager or recruiter asks for money to process an application, schedule an interview, or issue a visa, stop communicating immediately.
- Verify offer letter barcodes. Scan and validate the official barcode printed on standard UAE job offers using official MOHRE channels before signing or sharing personal documents.
- Report fraudulent activity. Notify MOHRE or Dubai Police if an agency or individual demands cash or online transfers in exchange for employment.
