UAE Public Schools 2026-27: What Changes for Families

The Ministry of Education has announced changes for the 2026-27 school year. The biggest one for parents of young children is that students in kindergarten to Grade 2 in public schools no longer get homework. The ministry says this should improve learning quality and balance daily routines.

The changes at a glance

• KG to Grade 2: no homework. Take-home worksheets are replaced by in-class activities, and families are encouraged to keep up light daily reading.
• Grades 9 to 12: for Group A subjects, assessments are split 50% school-based and 50% central. Teachers can also run diagnostic tests at school level.
• Grade 7: a Project-Based Learning and Assessment model combining Arabic, English, mathematics and science, running in 366 public and private schools and reaching more than 129,000 students.
• School evaluations: a new programme will evaluate public and private schools licensed by the ministry. Details of method and timing were not given.

What parents can do

1. Replace homework time with reading together and play for KG to Grade 2 children.
2. For Grades 9 to 12, ask the school how the 50% school-based marks are collected.
3. Check the 2026-27 school calendar for the assessment windows.
