Days of Thunder 2 Lands June 2028 Release with Tom Cruise
Paramount Pictures has scheduled a June 2, 2028 theatrical release for Days of Thunder 2, bringing Tom Cruise back to the franchise alongside new co-star Anne Hathaway. Moviegoers and action-film fans will see Cruise reprise his role as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle in the upcoming sequel, which is slated to begin production early next year.
Jonathan Levine Directs as Hathaway Enters Racing Franchise
Cruise announced the project on August 29 at Daytona International Speedway during the Coke Zero Sugar 400, sharing a photo alongside a NASCAR race car and confirming Hathaway’s casting. Hathaway will portray a team owner and engineer, telling Cruise in a promotional video released with the announcement that production would follow the birth of her child.
Jonathan Levine is directing the feature from a script written by Will Staples. Cruise will produce the follow-up alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper, and the production will also be filmed specifically for Imax.
The original 1990 racing drama, directed by Tony Scott, grossed $157.9 million at the box office against a $60 million budget. That film famously followed Trickle as he recovered from near-career-ending injuries suffered at the Daytona summer race to win the Daytona 500 the following February. Its ensemble cast included Robert Duvall, Nicole Kidman, Cary Elwes, and Randy Quaid. Plot details for the new Paramount release have not yet been disclosed.
Paramount’s greenlight arrives 38 years after the original film established the high-speed racing franchise.
