Thailand Halves Visa-Free Tourist Entry to 30 Days From Sept 15
Thailand will shorten its visa-free stay allowance for tourists from more than 60 countries and territories from 60 days to 30 days starting September 15, 2026.
The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the rule change as part of broader government measures to prevent foreign nationals from abusing the immigration system.
Countries Affected by the New Entry Limit
The reduction directly impacts travelers from over 60 nations, including China, the United States, and 27 European Union member states.
Under the previous framework, Thailand permitted tourists from more than 90 countries, including the 29-nation Schengen area, India, China, the US, and several South American nations, to enter without a visa for up to 60 days. The legal status of visa-free access for approximately 20 other countries currently on the 60-day list remains unconfirmed, with consular officials declining to comment on their specific standing.
Select nations will see an increase in their stay limits. Passport holders from Peru, Brazil, and South Korea will receive 90-day visa-free entry, up from their previous 60-day allowance.
Administrative Extensions and Law Enforcement Focus
Travelers entering under the revised 30-day allowance will be permitted to extend their stay once. However, a government spokeswoman noted that approving any extension remains strictly at the discretion of the individual immigration officer reviewing the application.
The Thai cabinet approved the policy shift in May. Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow stated that trimming visa-free stays is designed to curb criminal activity carried out by foreign nationals operating under tourist status. Recent enforcement actions have targeted foreigners linked to drug offenses, human trafficking, and the operation of unauthorized businesses, including unlicensed hotels and private schools.
The regulatory tightening comes as Thailand seeks to balance public security with tourism revenue. Official government figures indicate Thailand has recorded 20.9 million foreign tourist arrivals so far this year, marking a 3 percent drop compared to the same period in 2025.
