Cristiano Ronaldo Demands Lifetime Stadium Bans After 'Jota' Chants
Cristiano Ronaldo called for lifetime stadium bans on Sunday for fans who directed offensive chants referencing the late Diogo Jota at Al-Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves during a Saudi Pro League match in Buraidah. Professional football clubs and governing bodies face mounting pressure to penalize abusive fan behavior following the incident.
Al-Hilal and Al-Taawoun file formal complaints as footage circulates online.
The confrontation occurred during Saturday’s fixture between Al-Taawoun and Al-Hilal, which concluded in a 6-0 victory for Al-Hilal, with Neves playing 75 minutes before being substituted. Footage filmed from the stands and widely circulated on social media showed supporters chanting ‘Jota’. Neves responded by pointing to his eye and up to the sky. Diogo Jota died on July 3, 2025, in a car crash in Zamora, northwestern Spain, alongside his brother Andre Silva, and Neves served as a pallbearer at his funeral.
Commenting on an Instagram post featuring the footage from his personal account, Ronaldo stated that the league must take swift action and punish the behavior. Individuals who act in such a manner should never be allowed to enter a football stadium again, according to the Al-Nassr forward.
Al-Hilal Club Company announced on Sunday that it filed a formal complaint with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, stating confidence that measures would be implemented to protect the integrity of sporting competition from offensive practices. Later that same day, Al-Taawoun released a statement strongly condemning the chants as completely unacceptable and pledging to coordinate with relevant authorities to hold offenders accountable.
