Rejected Indonesian Exemption Signals Strict Enforcement on Mandatory Events
A penalty of up to $10,000, or Dh36,725, alongside the loss of ranking points, will take effect if Eala competes in Japan without an approved Women’s Tennis Association exemption, threatening her position after reaching a world ranking of 18 following a third-round appearance at the 2026 US Open.
Philippine lawmakers have publicly backed the player, with Senator Erwin Tulfo urging the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee to explore legal routes to cover any financial penalties, while Senator Bong Go publicly supported the Philippine Tennis Association’s formal exemption petition filed with the tour.
The conflict follows the withdrawal of Indonesian player Janice Tjen, ranked 35th in the world, who pulled out of the Asian Games after the Women’s Tennis Association formally denied her appeal for a tournament waiver.
