Joanna Wietrzyk Forfeits HYROX Beijing Win After Hygiene Backlash
Australian HYROX athlete Joanna Wietrzyk has retroactively withdrawn from her Beijing race victory and forfeited her earned points following a viral hygiene controversy. The 22-year-old world-record holder faced intense global backlash after continuing to compete on shared fitness equipment during the September 12 women’s Pro event despite suffering a bowel accident mid-race.
Wietrzyk crossed the finish line with a time of 1 hour, 1 minute and 23 seconds, securing first place. However, photographs and video footage of her continuing the grueling course, which requires athletes to run one kilometer between workout stations such as sled pushes, burpees, rowing, and weighted sandbag lunges, spread rapidly across social media platforms, drawing severe criticism over contamination risks on shared gear.
Following the online scrutiny, Wietrzyk issued a public apology directed at the people of China, fellow competitors, spectators, and HYROX organizers. She stated that she felt entirely healthy when the race began and had no reason to anticipate falling ill, but conceded that she made a mistake by remaining on the track. She acknowledged full responsibility for her actions and expressed deep regret for the disruption caused, confirming she would step away from competition temporarily to recover and reflect away from public scrutiny. Prior to her statement, she had posted a selfie from a hospital bed following the event with remarks that were subsequently deleted.
HYROX co-founder Moritz Furste acknowledged the organization’s mishandling of the situation, admitting that race officials should have intervened and stopped Wietrzyk immediately rather than allowing her to finish.
In the wake of the incident, HYROX implemented a regulatory change. The updated rulebook now grants race directors explicit authority to pull any competitor on medical grounds if blood, vomit, urine, or faeces presents a tangible contamination or welfare hazard to fellow athletes and participants.
