
Software defect triggered meltdown that axed 2,000 UK flights
A previously unknown legacy software defect inside National Air Traffic Services’ flight data system caused the UK air traffic control outage on September 8, 2026, forcing over 2,000 flight cancellations nationwide. The technical failure directly disrupted travel plans for hundreds of thousands of passengers and hit international airlines with millions of pounds in operational costs.
Data corrupted in a single millisecond during routine squawk request
The failure struck the London Area Control Centre, which manages airspace above 24,500 feet, when a manual request for an aircraft squawk code was paused to process a higher-priority activity. When the processing resumed a millisecond later, the software defect corrupted the resulting output and affected subsequent flight data updates. To maintain safety, air traffic controllers immediately restricted airspace capacity across the entire United Kingdom, forcing handovers onto manual backup protocols while the National Airspace System was restarted and reloaded under pre-defined, controlled conditions.
NATS Chief Executive Martin Rolfe confirmed that mitigation measures are currently active while a permanent software fix undergoes safety testing, clarifying that the breakdown was completely unrelated to a 2023 outage caused by duplicate flight-plan waypoints or to military intervention.
