371 Detained Across Eight Cities as Italy Clamps Down on Protests
Italian police arrested nine people and briefly detained 371 others, including 110 minors, as anti-government demonstrations over the rising cost of living hit eight cities on Saturday. Urban centers across the country faced massive security deployments and localized clashes as demonstrator groups took to the streets to rally against economic pressures.
Security Forces Deploy Troops to Prevent Urban Damage
Demonstrators in Rome, Turin, Naples, Bologna, and Florence threw bottles, stones, and firecrackers during clashes with police, while military forces deployed directly into Milan to prevent a repeat of prior looting and property fires in its central shopping district. Authorities also arrested a 30-year-old man suspected of leading the October 17 Movement, the main group calling for nationwide action against rising rents, low wages, and inflation.
The security measures follow earlier waves of coordinated economic demonstrations across Europe, including unrest in France that resulted in over 1,000 arrests, alongside protests in Albania where riot police deployed water cannons against crowds in Tirana.
