Democrat Abdul El-Sayed Secures Historic Victory in Michigan Senate Race
Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan‘s open US Senate seat, becoming the first Muslim elected to the upper chamber of the US Congress. The victory by the 42-year-old former public health official preserved a critical seat for Democrats in their push for Senate control following the retirement of Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
Progressive Platform Secures Seat Amid Fierce Campaign Battle
El-Sayed defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers, a 63-year-old former congressman and FBI agent backed by Donald Trump, after running on a platform centered on Medicare for All, reducing corporate political influence, and lowering living expenses for working families. Rogers attempted to draw support by targeting El-Sayed’s foreign policy stances, including his opposition to US military aid for Israel, while also attempting to address voter economic concerns by breaking with Trump late in the campaign on trade disputes with Canada and military conflict in Iran.
The election outcome held a vital position for Democrats, who entered the midterm cycle needing a net gain of four seats to overturn a 53-47 Republican Senate majority.
