Calls grow for Pete Hegseth to resign over Iran conflict fallout
United States Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth is facing mounting pressure to resign or face impeachment proceedings in Washington D.C. next week following sweeping midterm election defeats attributed to the conflict with Iran. Defense officials, global energy markets, and military leadership face immediate operational uncertainty as incoming congressional majorities prepare broad oversight into the Pentagon’s strategic direction.
Impeachment resolution set for next week as economic fallout drives election shift
Iran’s partial blockade of the strategic Strait of Hormuz waterway has triggered severe global energy price surges, creating economic disruptions that President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance acknowledged drove recent congressional losses. Republican Representative Thomas Massie confirmed plans to reintroduce articles of impeachment against Hegseth when the House reconvenes next week, noting the resolution would only be withdrawn if Hegseth steps down.
Democratic lawmakers, having won majorities in both houses of Congress, announced immediate plans to utilize funding controls and committee oversight to scrutinize the Department of Defense. Representative Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, targeted the war against Iran, Caribbean boat strikes, domestic troop deployments, and the removal of senior military personnel, including former top-ranking officer Charles “CQ” Brown, as primary focus areas for upcoming congressional hearings. Representative Jason Crow also confirmed intent to challenge Hegseth’s leadership directly over troop safety and national security concerns.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell dismissed the legislative push, stating Hegseth will not be deterred by partisan investigations and remains 100 percent committed to leading the Defense Department until President Donald Trump’s term ends.
The current challenge follows prior controversies during Hegseth’s time in office, including an operational security breach involving a Signal group chat during strikes on Yemen and a recently scrapped proposal to livestream a military firing squad execution.
