Nearly 1-Year US Visa Wait Times Push UAE Holidaymakers to Visa-Free Hubs
📣 ARTICLE HEADLINE
UAE residents planning winter holiday trips are pivoting away from European and US destinations as visa appointment shortages and multi-month processing backlogs upend traditional booking timelines.
With the UAE National Day holiday and winter school break approaching, travel agencies report a fundamental change in how residents plan their trips. Travellers are now locking in visa appointment dates and checking processing timelines before committing to flights or hotels.
| Destination Category | Visa Access Status | Processing Timeline / Appointment Availability |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Regular visa interview required | Waiting periods of up to nearly one year |
| Schengen Zone (Europe) | Embassies taking over 1 month to return passports | Appointments unavailable for weeks or longer |
| Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan | Visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or online application | Immediate or streamlined processing |
Pluto Travels managing partner Bharat Aidasani highlighted that difficulty securing European visa appointments is driving residents to explore alternative options. Rather than picking a city first and arranging paperwork second, travellers now let visa availability dictate the destination.
The situation for US-bound travellers is similarly constrained. Go Now Tourism founder Fazil Firoos noted that some applicants face interview waiting periods reaching nearly twelve months. Firoos attributed part of this backlog to a temporary global suspension of US visa services that lasted more than three months. Even when additional appointment slots drop, availability fills rapidly. Schengen visa processing is also stretching past a month at certain embassies after passport submission, leaving some residents without their travel documents for weeks.
To avoid postponed trips or lost deposits, musafir.com Vice-President of Operations Rashida Zahid advised that travellers targeting Schengen countries or the United States need to organize bookings and applications at least two to three months in advance, especially ahead of peak holiday cycles.
The administrative logjam is steering expatriate families toward hassle-free corridors. Destinations offering visa-free entry, visas on arrival, or quick e-visas are seeing elevated demand. Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan remain top choices for short-haul travel from the Gulf, while Kazakhstan is rapidly gaining traction as a straightforward alternative for the winter break.
