12 Ways You Could Lose Your UAE Driving Licence Under New 2027 Rules
Motorists across the UAE face stricter enforcement rules on driving privileges beginning January 1, 2027, under new implementing regulations for Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024 on the Regulation of Traffic.
The updated framework gives licensing authorities clear legal grounds to suspend, cancel, or refuse to renew driving permits based on driver traffic records, court orders, and medical fitness.
Grounds for Suspension, Cancellation, and Blocked Renewals
The regulations divide administrative actions into three distinct categories, creating 12 specific scenarios where a driver can lose their driving privileges:
- Licence Suspension (3 grounds): Licensing authorities may suspend a permit if ordered by a court ruling, when a driver hits the cumulative limit of traffic black points, or if a driver is determined to lack legal capacity or medical fitness.
- Licence Cancellation (5 grounds): A licence can be permanently revoked by court order, by accumulating maximum black points, upon the permit holder’s voluntary request, upon the holder’s death, or due to a verified lack of legal capacity or medical fitness.
- Refusal of Renewal (4 grounds): Licensing authorities can deny a renewal application if the driver lacks medical fitness or legal capacity, if a court orders the refusal, if the driver has hit the cumulative black point limit, or if there are unpaid traffic violations on the driver’s traffic file.
Mandatory Medical Reporting and Mandatory Retesting
Health authorities across the UAE are now required to share diagnostic data directly with licensing authorities. Medical providers must report any individual diagnosed with a disease or health condition that compromises their ability to operate a vehicle safely.
Eye test criteria are also codified under Article 62. Drivers applying for or renewing light vehicle licences must meet a minimum visual acuity benchmark of 6/18 in each eye separately.
For drivers holding long-expired permits, Article 76 introduces strict re-entry testing. Anyone trying to renew a driving licence that has been expired for more than 10 years, without any renewal during that period, must retake both practical and theoretical driving examinations. The Federal Traffic Council sets the minimum examination standards for these re-evaluations.
Strict Renewal Timelines and Fine Clearances
Article 73 establishes a strict administrative window for maintaining an active permit. Motorists must submit their renewal applications within 30 days of their licence expiry date.
Before any renewal application can move forward, drivers must settle all outstanding traffic fines linked to their traffic file or present valid proof of payment for any court-issued penalties tied to breaches of the traffic law.
