7-Year-Old US Girl Killed in Helicopter Fire During Cartel Operation
Mexican state police firing from a helicopter shot and killed a seven-year-old American girl in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, during an October 29 drug enforcement operation. The fatal shooting has intensified safety concerns for cross-border families and international travelers navigating volatile transit corridors near the United States border.
State Prosecutor Investigates Helicopter Crew as Officers Remain Free
State police gunfire struck seven-year-old Aranza in the head as she traveled in a pickup truck alongside her parents and four siblings. Her family pulled over and her father exited the vehicle to signal to the overhead aircraft that civilians and children were inside, but gunfire hit the vehicle regardless. Tamaulipas Attorney General Jesus Govea confirmed that the officers involved remain free while state prosecutors advance an investigation into claims that the crew was responding to ground fire.
The incident unfolded after police captured a target in Matamoros, directly across from Brownsville, Texas. That arrest prompted armed gunmen to launch immediate street blockades across the border city, sparking the aerial police response that resulted in the strike on the family’s truck.
