Dubai South is preparing for its next physical expansion beat. Down near Jebel Ali Port and the Free Zone, Al Maktoum International Airport will bring its second runway into operation by the end of 2027, marking the next major operational milestone for the 70-square-kilometre facility.
What a Second Runway and Airline Moves Mean for Local Residents
The runway opening marks the start of a phased transition across Dubai’s airspace network. flydubai is lined up to be the first carrier making the shift, with plans to move an initial batch of five or six aircraft to Dubai World Central in 2027 before a broader operational transition takes place over several months.
As the broader Dhs128 billion development moves toward its initial 2032 completion target, the surrounding Dubai South district is structured to anchor an entire urban center designed for over a million residents and workers alongside major logistics firms. Travel routines through the airport are also slated to change, with Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths outlining plans for automated procedures, rail-station check-ins, and reduced document checks aimed at making arrivals feel closer to entering a hotel lobby than a traditional terminal.
Phase 1 of the airport development will increase capacity to 150 million passengers annually in the early 2030s, eventually scaling to five parallel runways and over 400 aircraft gates handling up to 260 million passengers a year.
