Branch 15 of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court has sentenced 42-year-old social media activist Amirhossein Mousavi to death on charges of corruption on earth over his posts on X. Iranian legal defense networks and digital rights observers now face intensified scrutiny as the judiciary targets online commentary.

The sentence was handed down by Judge Abolghasem Salavati, an official currently under United States, British, and European Union sanctions for human rights abuses. According to defense lawyer Reza Shafakhah, the conviction centers on activity published under the online account name “James Bidin.”
Mousavi, who has been held in detention since December 2024, received an additional five-year prison term for insulting religious sanctities, a detail confirmed by his sister on social media. Before the verdict, Mousavi had received backing from families of slain protesters, including relatives of individuals killed during the 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom demonstrations, for amplifying their accounts online.
The ruling arrives amid a broader wave of legal crackdowns across Iran, aligning with international condemnation surrounding the December re-arrest of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi in Mashhad following a memorial ceremony.
