Dubai Home Security Cameras: What SIRA Rules Say and How to Stay Safe
Buying a smart camera and connecting it to your home Wi-Fi is easy, but Dubai has rules on what you can install and real cyber risks if the system is poorly set up. The Security Industry Regulatory Agency (SIRA), which regulates Dubai’s private security sector, sets technical specifications for security systems, and Digital Dubai promotes cyber safety for connected devices.
SIRA rules to know
- Visible indoor cameras: indoor cameras should be clearly visible. Hidden or covert cameras require SIRA approval.
- No audio without permission: cameras with audio recording are prohibited unless SIRA grants permission.
- Coverage limits: under SIRA’s 2025 manual, external roof-mounted cameras cannot monitor beyond the facility’s boundaries unless SIRA approves.
Privacy and placement
Cameras should serve a legitimate security purpose. Covering your own entrances, gate and driveway is reasonable, but pointing a lens at a neighbour’s home, balcony or garden risks intruding on their privacy.
Installation
Use a SIRA-licensed installer, who can help with placement and calibration and reduce false alarms. Licensed installers can also make hardwired connections, which are harder to tamper with than standard Wi-Fi. SIRA publishes a list of authorised providers on its website.
Protect the system from hackers
- Use a long passphrase of random words with numbers and symbols, and avoid pet names, birthdates or reused passwords.
- Use a password manager and turn on two-factor authentication.
- Install software and firmware updates, which patch holes attackers scan for.
- If you do not need remote access, disconnecting the system from the internet keeps footage local and removes a remote attack path. The system still works during power outages.

Dubai Police offers a 24/7 smart home security service with door and window sensors, motion detectors and cameras linked to a monitoring station that alerts police if a threat is detected, with remote access through an app or web portal.
