Dozens of European Flights Targeted in Wave of Hoax Bomb Threats
Dozens of commercial flights across Europe were targeted by a sudden wave of hoax bomb threats this week, forcing emergency landings, plane searches, and military fighter jet escorts. Commercial air carriers, regional aviation authorities, and security agencies scrambled to maintain flight schedules and ensure passenger safety as the hoaxes triggered localized air traffic disruptions across the continent.
Brussels Security Summit Called as European Authorities Investigate Broad Threat Wave
Security experts will convene in Brussels next week to formulate coordinated response protocols following the rash of hoaxes that triggered NATO fighter jet deployments and forced emergency diversions across multiple European air corridors. An email received Thursday by airport authorities in Rome purported to come from a group describing itself as anti-feminist and claiming to target a “feminist regime,” while Dutch Marechaussee military police detained and subsequently released a man at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport following a threat to a Prague-bound flight. Media organizations including Ireland’s RTE, the UK’s Sky, and Bulgaria’s NOVA TV also received security threats on Friday, signaling potential expansion beyond aviation channels. Matthew Borie, co-founder and chief intelligence officer of Osprey Flight Solutions, noted the pattern could range from copycat actors to hybrid warfare operations, while Bruegel think tank senior fellow Jacob Funk Kirkegaard stated the wave effectively stress-tested government and airport response mechanisms.
The wave of airline hoaxes comes on the heels of other recent European disruptions, including attacks on supermarket refrigeration systems and unauthorized drone incursions.
