GTA VI Preview Beats Major Films with 31.1 Million Views on Netflix
A 27-minute gameplay preview for Grand Theft Auto VI logged 31.1 million views during a six-hour exclusive window on Netflix, topping the platform’s global weekly viewing charts on September 2, 2026. Entertainment executives and industry analysts watched promotional gaming footage capture the service’s overall top spot for the first time, outpacing all scripted films and series on the platform.
Gaming footage outperforms De Niro thriller and Outer Banks finale
Data released by Netflix data arm Tudum confirmed the video game preview surpassed the film chart leader, Robert De Niro’s thriller *The Whisper Man*, which recorded 20 million views, alongside the Spanish title *Facing El Chapo*. On the television side, *Death of the Pastor’s Wife* led series viewing with 19 million views, pushing the final season of *Outer Banks* down to third place.
PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S players will gain access to the full title when developer Rockstar Games releases the game on November 19, 2026. The preview showcased the fictional state of Leonida, a setting modeled after Florida, and detailed the storyline surrounding dual protagonists Jason Duval, a former Army veteran, and Lucia Caminos, who entered the plot following imprisonment at Leonida Penitentiary.
The broadcast follows a historic pattern of viewer interest for the franchise, built on the 293 million YouTube views accumulated by the game’s initial 2023 trailer and the more than 230 million copies sold by predecessor Grand Theft Auto V since 2013. The preview’s premiere also came shortly after parent company Take-Two Interactive Software issued a subpoena to Discord to identify the source of unauthorized footage leaked online in the days preceding the event.
