Iran US war: Supreme leader warns of wider conflict after US poll defeat
Iran‘s supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned on Wednesday that the Middle East conflict would widen if the United States resumes military attacks, dismissing any expectation of a strategic shift following congressional midterm losses for President Donald Trump. International diplomats and regional analysts monitor the standoff as mediation efforts led by Qatar run parallel to active military postures.
Tehran rejects Washington policy shifts as regional mediators push for diplomatic breakthroughs
The warning follows United States strikes on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, where Iranian state media reported five rapid explosions following the completion of an anti-aircraft facility. President Donald Trump acknowledged the conflict may have contributed to his Republican Party’s congressional defeat, telling media outlets that a full-scale resumption of war may not be necessary despite maintaining a locked and loaded stance.
Iranian chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf posted on social media that Americans had voted against war in the midterms, stating that Tehran’s opposition would come with severe consequences if Washington betrayed public will. Judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei also addressed the political outcome, claiming that Trump had been defeated both militarily and politically.
Diplomatic efforts by regional mediators remain active to prevent any resumption of fighting in the ongoing conflict, which began on February 28, 2026.
