Serve Traffic Impoundments at Home Under Kuwait's New Smart System
Kuwait is rolling out a smart home vehicle impoundment system on September 6, 2026, allowing motorists to serve traffic penalties from their driveways instead of municipal yards. The Ministry of Interior and the General Traffic Department introduced the initiative to modernise digital services and streamline local transport procedures.
Under the new framework, officers fit a smart impoundment device directly to the vehicle at the exact location where the violation is recorded. The penalty period officially kicks off at midnight on that same day, which gives vehicle owners a practical window to drive the car home and park it at their designated location.
Drivers caught with infractions that carry an impoundment penalty will face direct out-of-pocket costs for the hardware and daily monitoring.

The system isn’t just for fresh violations. Motorists whose vehicles are already locked away in traditional traffic impoundment yards can apply to transfer their cars to the smart home setup, finishing out the rest of their sentence at home.
Once the clock runs out on the penalty, drivers don’t have to guess about the next steps. Kuwait‘s Sahel government services application will trigger an automated notification. Vehicle owners must then head over to a location designated by the General Traffic Department to clear the release paperwork and remove the hardware.
