Pre-2020 Omani Banknotes Expire Sept 21 as Central Bank Sets Cut-Off
The Central Bank of Oman will officially stop accepting claims for pre-2020 banknotes at the close of business hours on Monday, September 21, 2026. If your business, treasury, or personal accounts hold physical Omani cash issued before the Sixth Series, you have until that date to swap those bills at an operating commercial bank. Once the deadline passes, the expired notes become non-redeemable paper.
Who Needs to Audit Their Cash Reserves
This mandate applies to anyone holding older Omani Rial denominations in physical reserves, petty cash funds, or corporate safes.
The affected currency covers all banknote issues printed before the CBO introduced its Sixth Series in 2020. That series was rolled out as part of Oman‘s broader currency modernisation programme to phase out legacy currency across the Sultanate. If your company handles cash transactions in Oman or maintains physical currency reserves, you’ll need to check every note in your inventory immediately.
How to Complete the Exchange
Exchanging legacy bills requires direct submission through commercial channels before the cut-off window shuts.
- Inspect all physical currency vaults, tills, and cash reserves for Omani banknotes issued prior to the 2020 Sixth Series.
- Present the identified bills at any commercial bank operating within the Sultanate of Oman before the end of business hours on September 21, 2026.
