EU Aligns With US Blockade Targeting Iranian Financial Networks
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed Thursday that the European Union has officially joined the US-led Operation Economic Outcast campaign to cut off Iran’s access to global financial networks. International banking institutions, commercial shipping operators, and digital asset platforms face immediate compliance pressure as Western allies widen restrictions across trade routes and technical services supporting Tehran.
Western Coalition Expands Sanctions Across Shipping and Digital Assets
The US Department of the Treasury launched the campaign last month to dismantle illicit revenue channels funding the Iranian government’s nuclear ambitions, ballistic missile programs, and regional proxies. Enforcing measures focus directly on covert networks moving Iranian crude oil, alongside targeted restrictions covering shipping infrastructure, technology services, and digital assets.
The European Union confirmed its willingness to impose additional economic measures, aligning its policy with Washington and G7 partners. In a statement released alongside the US announcement, the bloc cited Iran‘s ongoing military support for Russia’s war in Ukraine, domestic violence, and destabilizing regional activities as primary drivers for the intervention. European leadership emphasized that economic pressure must coincide with diplomatic efforts to secure regional stability and maintain open commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Bessent stated that the coordinated campaign leaves Tehran with a choice between severe global financial isolation under a subsistence economy or engaging in peace negotiations to rejoin international markets.
The joint action follows the Treasury Department’s identification last month of secondary financial routes and maritime transport entities used by Iran to circumvent existing international sanctions.
