Tesla will host an exclusive launch event for its steering-wheel-free Cybercab robotaxi on September 3 in Austin, Texas. The upcoming deployment signals direct commercial competition for autonomous ride-hailing operators and transport platforms expanding across public roadways.
Two-passenger vehicle operates without pedals or steering controls
Employee road tests on public streets in Austin will mark the initial rollout phase before Cybercabs enter commercial service alongside Tesla’s existing robotaxi fleet. First unveiled in October 2024, the gold-coloured, two-passenger vehicle represents the manufacturer’s first model engineered entirely without a steering wheel or pedals. Company founder Elon Musk previously outlined plans to begin full vehicle production before 2027, targeting a retail purchase price under $30,000 for private buyers. Tesla confirmed the Austin event on its official website, launching a promotional sweepstakes for public access tickets to its Texas headquarters.
Commercial deployment of purpose-built driverless vehicles faces ongoing regulatory oversight across key operational markets. State transport regulations in Texas, Florida, and California currently require human safety supervisors or drivers ready to assume control in many driverless passenger operations.
The Cybercab rollout follows Tesla‘s initial 2025 deployment of self-driving Model Y SUVs in Austin, placing the company in direct competition with Alphabet subsidiary Waymo, which currently operates autonomous commercial ride services across 11 US cities.
