What You Need to Know Before Setting Up Camp in the UAE This Winter
The UAE‘s outdoor season runs from November to March, bringing cooler overnight temperatures and opening up the desert, mountains, and coastline for camping. However, pitching a tent requires keeping track of local regulations, permission rules, and safety protocols that vary depending on where you set up camp.
Where You Need Permits and Where You Do Not
Short overnight desert camping trips in Dubai generally do not require prior permission, according to Arabian Wanderers founder George Kfoury. That freedom changes the moment you move toward coastline or designated spaces: beaches, nature reserves, and managed campsites frequently enforce specific access restrictions or approval requirements.
Private land always requires explicit permission from the property owner before pitching a tent, and marked no-camping zones must be respected. For beginners, using established campsites with direct road access avoids the risks associated with navigating deep sand without support. Anyone venturing into remote desert locations needs a suitable 4×4 vehicle, desert-driving experience, and proper recovery equipment, along with leaving their route details and expected return time with someone on land.
Fire Safety and Campfire Regulations
Careless fire use risks both personal injury and immediate ecological damage. Fires should never be lit directly on the ground; campers must use a raised fire pit or designated barbecue area instead.
Flames need to be positioned clear of tents, dry brush, and flammable materials, with water and a fire extinguisher kept immediately at hand. Burning charcoal or operating a barbecue inside an enclosed tent is strictly unsafe under any circumstances. Before sleeping or leaving the campsite, open flames must be extinguished completely, and cooled ashes must be bagged and disposed of responsibly rather than buried under the sand. Local fire restrictions must also be monitored during periods of high wind or temporary bans.
Choosing Your Location and Environmental Guidelines
Choosing a pitch on stable, level ground inside established camping zones protects both campers and natural terrain. Greenway Adventures operations manager and expedition leader Nasar Husain warns campers to strictly avoid dry riverbeds, valleys, and flood-prone low ground where sudden weather shifts create immediate hazards.
Pack lists for overnight trips require:
- Shelter and bedding: A winter-rated tent, sleeping mattress, sleeping bag, and warm clothing layers for cold overnight desert temperatures.
- Food and hydration: Adequate drinking water, meals, snacks, and a sealed cooler.
- Safety gear: A first-aid kit, flashlight or headlamp, and fully charged power banks.
- Navigation tools: Offline digital maps and a pre-planned route to the site.
- Waste management: Trash bags to carry out all waste, leaving no garbage behind.
