Schools and universities closed for the Hijri New Year
Dubai schools and universities were closed on Monday 15 June 2026 for the Hijri New Year (1448 AH), alongside federal government entities and the private sector. Classes resumed on Tuesday 16 June. For households on a Saturday and Sunday weekend, the break ran three days, from Saturday 13 to Monday 15 June, and the last school day beforehand was Friday 12 June.
What families had to check
- School transport: whether bus routes ran on the days around the holiday, particularly Friday 12 June.
- Assessments: any exam or test schedules near the long weekend.
- University services: registration, library access and student services, which could follow the closure with each institution setting its own arrangements.
Why the holiday was on a Monday
The Hijri New Year itself was expected on 16 or 17 June. The Cabinet moved the holiday to Monday 15 June under Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024. Read the details in the UAE announcement and why the date moved.
