Dubai Overtakes New York as World's 2nd Smartest City
In a significant recognition of its smart city initiatives, Dubai has been ranked the world’s second most intelligent city in the inaugural Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Intelligent Cities Index 2026. This ranking places Dubai ahead of New York City, Washington, and Amsterdam, with London securing the top spot overall. The city’s strong performance is attributed to its extensive adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and smart city technologies, making it a global leader in this area.
Dubai’s high ranking is a result of its robust technology adoption, with the city rolling out more smart city use cases than most cities in the study. This has led to high resident satisfaction with smart city apps, creating a positive cycle that encourages wider adoption and better services. The BCG report notes that Dubai’s approach to becoming an intelligent city is driven by its strength in technology adoption, making it an exemplary model for other cities to follow.
The Intelligent Cities Index assessed 61 of the world’s biggest cities across five areas: outcomes, strategy, adoption, ways of working, and enablers. Cities were then grouped into four maturity levels: leading, accelerating, emerging, and developing. Dubai‘s ranking reflects its commitment to leveraging technology to improve the quality of life for its residents and businesses. With its focus on AI and smart city innovation, Dubai is poised to continue its growth as a hub for technological advancement and sustainability.
The top 10 most intelligent cities in the world, according to the BCG index, are London, Dubai, New York City, Washington DC, Amsterdam, Berlin, San Francisco, Shanghai, Beijing, and Seoul. This ranking highlights the importance of embracing technological innovation and smart city solutions to drive economic growth, improve resident outcomes, and enhance the overall quality of life.
In the context of Dubai’s strategic development plans, this ranking supports the city’s vision for a connected and sustainable future. By prioritizing AI adoption and smart city innovation, Dubai is well-positioned to achieve its goals and maintain its status as a global leader in intelligent city development.
