Marco Rubio: No Decision Yet on Fresh US Strikes Against Iran
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Saturday that Washington has not yet decided on launching fresh military strikes against Iran as diplomatic peace talks remain stalled. Regional allies and commercial shipping operators face mounting uncertainty as the White House weighs potential military action following upcoming midterm elections.
Speaking at a press conference in Atlanta, Georgia, during a two-day G20 foreign ministers meeting, Rubio stated that President Donald Trump has not finalized a decision on further operations. While condemning Tehran for actively targeting commercial vessels, Rubio maintained that Washington remains open to a diplomatic resolution to end the conflict, which first broke out on February 28.
Rubio declined to characterize the progress of ongoing discussions or provide a specific timeline for a diplomatic breakthrough. The remarks follow earlier warnings from the administration regarding potential military measures following Tuesday’s midterm elections, with officials previously weighing whether to expand the campaign.
Iran’s supreme leader warned the United States and Israel on Saturday against launching new attacks, pushing back against threats of resumed strikes. Meanwhile, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas urged restraint, stating that further escalation benefits no party, while Qatari mediators continue diplomatic efforts in Tehran.
