Gaza Unsafe: UN Warns of Ongoing Threats to Civilians
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that Gaza remains unsafe for civilians, as shootings and other military attacks continue, including in places where children are trying to learn. Civilians, including students and teachers, are affected by these ongoing attacks, with a sixth-grade student recently hit by a bullet and injured in a tented classroom in Gaza City.
OCHA stressed that under international humanitarian law, civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected and should not be targeted, emphasizing that learning spaces must remain safe and protected environments for students and teachers. The situation is further complicated by the demolition of homes and schools, such as the last remaining school in a four-school compound in Beit Lahia, which was reportedly demolished by Israeli forces.
The ongoing military operations and expanding access restrictions continue to endanger civilian lives and education in Gaza and the West Bank. OCHA reported that Israeli forces had advanced towards areas between the agreed deployment line known as the “Yellow Line” and the Israeli “Orange” coordination line, destroying tents of nearly a dozen families sheltering in a schoolyard and placing new cement blocks nearby.
This incident is part of a larger pattern of violence and restriction in the region, which has led to the displacement of people and the destruction of critical infrastructure like schools. OCHA‘s warning highlights the urgent need to protect civilians and ensure that learning spaces remain safe.
