Platform displays now show “Lake America” exclusively for accounts and devices located inside the United States, while users browsing from Canada continue to see “Lake Ontario,” the Indigenous-rooted name in official use since the 17th century. International users accessing the platform from outside both North American nations will see both titles displayed side by side.
Google confirmed in an official blog post that the regional rollout reflects its standard policy of mirroring updates made by official government sources, specifically the U.S. Geographic Names Information System. The nomenclatural change comes amid an escalating trade dispute featuring tit-for-tat tariffs between Washington and Ottawa on billions of dollars in goods. Ontario Premier Doug Ford offered fresh criticism of both the ongoing trade war and the federal lake renaming, while rival navigation service Apple Maps made no mention of “Lake America” on its platform.
The geographic revision follows a similar presidential directive from early 2025 that led Google Maps to alter the designation of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
