Four Acts Quit Ed Sheeran’s Tour After Macklemore Dropped Over Gaza Remarks
Four supporting acts quit British superstar Ed Sheeran‘s “Loop Tour” on Tuesday after rapper Macklemore was dropped from the lineup for making pro-Palestinian statements on stage. Finneas, Irish acts Beoga and Aaron Rowe, and Denmark’s Lukas Graham severed ties with the production as the fallout over political speech during live performances intensified.
Promoter And Venue Owners Blamed For Removal
Messina Touring Group ended Macklemore‘s contract after venues threatened to cancel shows following his declaration of “Free Palestine!” and his message that Palestinians were “not forgotten” at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium earlier this month. Sheeran stated in a social media post that he held prolonged discussions with venue managers, including Robert Kraft, owner of Boston’s Gillette Stadium and the Patriots NFL team, but was ultimately unable to resolve the dispute. Kraft stated that Gillette Stadium would “not provide a platform for hate speech.”
Finneas posted that artists must not be silenced when speaking up for the oppressed, adding that he stands with Palestine and its people. Meanwhile, the touring band Beoga cited their identity as Irish people who understand colonialism, while Aaron Rowe pointed to Ireland’s history with genocide and forced famine in explaining his decision to leave. Sheeran denied being behind the removal, maintaining that he respects Macklemore’s strength of purpose while noting that concertgoers do not expect a political forum.
The departures follow Macklemore’s release of his 2024 single “Hind’s Hall,” which paid tribute to five-year-old Hind Rajab amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
