Al Ain Airport renamed Tahnoun International to honor late leader
Al Ain International Airport has officially taken on a new name. Under directives from UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the aviation hub is now Tahnoun International Airport.
The name change took effect on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
Honoring decades of service in the eastern region
The new title pays tribute to the late Sheikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, who served as the Abu Dhabi Ruler’s Representative in the Al Ain Region until his passing in 2024. Known for his close personal ties with local residents and his work alongside the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Sheikh Tahnoun played a key role in the early development of the emirate.
Beyond his leadership in Al Ain, Sheikh Tahnoun previously served as chairman of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and deputy chairman of the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi. This is not the first major infrastructure landmark in the area to bear his name; in 2018, the primary highway connecting Dubai and Al Ain was officially renamed Sheikh Tahnoun Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan Road in recognition of his contributions.
Travelers and residents navigating to and from the airport will see the updated name rolled out across regional signposting and official aviation listings.
