Fighter Jet Escorts Wizz Air Flight to Budapest After Bomb Threat
A Wizz Air flight bound for Sofia made an emergency landing in Hungary on Monday after a bomb threat triggered a military jet escort over Eastern Europe. Passengers aboard the Airbus A321 travelling from London Luton Airport were diverted while flying over Bosnia and Herzegovina before landing at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport.
Fighter Jet Scrambled Within Minutes of Airborne Alert
Hungarian Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi confirmed a Gripen fighter jet deployed from the Kecskemét air base escorted the airliner directly into Budapest, where local police and security personnel conducted checks on the aircraft and its occupants. Wizz Air confirmed that the security inspection yielded no suspicious items and that the aircraft was expected to resume its journey shortly.
Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft departed London Luton at 8:33 am GMT with a scheduled Sofia arrival of 1:25 pm local time, before touching down safely in Budapest at approximately 12:09 pm local time.
