Campaigners and European Lawmakers Demand Bans on Sales of Smart Glasses
📣 ARTICLE HEADLINE
European lawmakers and privacy campaigners are pushing for bans and retail restrictions on AI-powered smart glasses following growing concerns over unauthorized public recording across the continent. The movement targets wearable devices capable of capturing photos and video without visible consent, with activists in the United Kingdom and Ireland petitioning retailers while European Union officials debate sales prohibitions.
Lawmakers and Activists Mobilize Against Public Surveillance
The petition movement in Britain and Ireland, organized under the “Stop Smart Glasses” campaign, urges consumers and supporters to contact retail stores directly to halt device distribution. Campaign co-founder and teacher Guy Holder warned that the technology threatens public spaces by enabling undisclosed recording and moving society toward unmonitored surveillance.
In Sweden, designer Mateusz Pozar launched the “Ban Ray” initiative, creating printable signs and stickers for private venues to prohibit wearable smart technology. Pozar established the project after his partner was approached and recorded by individuals wearing camera-equipped frames, prompting a wider call for public debate over personal data rights and consent.
European Parliament lawmaker Alex Agius Saliba advocated for formal legislative intervention, describing the current lack of safeguards as unviable and calling for a full ban on device sales until their safety and privacy features are conclusively demonstrated.
European Regulators Weigh Privacy Risks
The independent European Data Protection Board has commissioned a specialized assessment expected in autumn 2026 to analyze the social acceptability and privacy implications of wearable camera technology. Findings from the report will inform potential legislative measures within the European Parliament.
National watchdogs are also taking preliminary steps, with France’s CNIL data protection authority issuing guidance urging public vigilance. Commercial adoption of the technology expanded rapidly following a high-profile marketing collaboration between Meta and Kylie Jenner, pushing sales of the multi-functional devices, which include audio playback, real-time translation, AI assistants, and concealed cameras, into the millions worldwide.
