Coastlines Shut After Offshore Oil Spill Spreads Fuel Smell Across Emirates
Sharjah Municipality temporarily closed Al Hamriya Beach on Friday following an offshore oil spill near Umm Al Quwain. The move halts beachgoers and local fishermen from entering the water while specialised environmental teams work to contain marine pollution along the emirate’s shoreline.
Offshore Spill Triggers Widespread Odour Reports as Authorities Neutralize Environmental Risk
All public beaches and coastal areas across neighbouring Umm Al Quwain also remain closed to the public while official response units deploy containment booms and undertake remediation work in affected waters. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment confirmed the offshore leak was the direct source of a fuel-like smell reported by residents across multiple emirates over three consecutive days, clarifying that the lingering odours pose no health risk to the public. Emergency crews are currently managing cordoning, skimming, and shoreline protection protocols until full safety assessments across the impacted coastal zones are finished.
