Desert Test Sandbox Paves Way for Abu Dhabi to RAK Air Route
Desert stretches across Ras Al Khaimah are set to host low-altitude flight trials following an agreement signed between local authorities and Chinese aircraft manufacturer Aridge. Overseen by the General Civil Aviation Authority, the initiative establishes a controlled regulatory sandbox in the emirate’s desert terrain to evaluate aircraft performance and draft safety rules before expanding to wider use.
Testing Inter-Emirate Travel Beyond the 90-Minute Highway Commute
The current 90-minute drive between Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah serves as the target path for a planned demonstration route designed to test inter-emirate air mobility. Managed through the Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority, Aridge will run flight validations in desert conditions to test flight planning, airspace coordination, ground support, and passenger handling protocols using its modular flying car, the Land Aircraft Carrier.
The desert testing framework follows a live flight demonstration conducted at Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi during an official reception attended by Chinese Ambassador Zeng Jixin and UAE government representatives. Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, stated that the partnership uses innovation to strengthen the emirate’s economy and modernize its local transport infrastructure.
