Pre-Register EU Border Checks: Free Travel App Opens for UAE Residents
📣 ARTICLE HEADLINE
How the Entry/Exit System Digital Checks Work
UAE residents flying to Europe this winter can pre-register their travel details using an official mobile app to speed up their border clearance. The European Commission’s free “Travel to Europe” app lets eligible non-EU travellers submit personal data before landing, helping cut down time spent at immigration counters.
The software supports the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES), which fully launched earlier this year to digitally record arrivals and departures while replacing standard physical passport stamps.
Using the app remains entirely voluntary. Travellers who opt out can still complete standard immigration procedures upon arrival, though pre-registering offers a faster route through participating border points.
| Feature | Standard EES Border Check | Pre-Registration via App |
|---|---|---|
| Data Entry Window | At the immigration counter upon arrival | Up to 72 hours before crossing the border |
| Pre-Submission Steps | None; completed entirely at airport kiosks/desks | Passport scan, facial selfie, entry questionnaire |
| Passport Stamping | Replaced by EES digital entry logs | Replaced by EES digital entry logs |
| Visa Requirement | Mandatory Schengen visa if nationality requires it | Mandatory Schengen visa if nationality requires it |
Which Border Control Rules Apply to You
Eligible non-EU nationals holding biometric passports, including UAE residents travelling on short stays, can download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. However, functions currently vary depending on your destination country.
Travellers entering Sweden can use the platform to scan their biometric passport, upload a facial image, and complete the entry questionnaire.
For those flying into Portugal, the app currently supports only the pre-arrival entry questionnaire.
The European Commission notes that other participating European nations may introduce the digital submission feature later, with tools varying by jurisdiction. If you are flying into France, Germany, Italy, or Switzerland, you should not assume the digital pre-registration service is available at your arrival airport yet.
The system does not modify or replace Schengen visa regulations. If your passport requires a visa to enter the Schengen zone, you must obtain it prior to travel. Pre-submitting data via the app does not guarantee entry into any state; European border officers retain full authority to evaluate whether arriving passengers meet standard entry conditions.
How to Register Your Trip Before Flying
If you are travelling through a participating port, you can complete the digital submission process within 72 hours of your flight:
- Download the “Travel to Europe” app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
- Create a journey by selecting your destination country, the specific border crossing point, and your estimated arrival time.
- Follow the prompt to scan your biometric passport, take a selfie photo, and fill out the entry questionnaire regarding your trip.
- Add any accompanying family members or travel companions to the submission if required.
- Submit the journey data no earlier than 72 hours before crossing the border, then follow the instructions provided by border authorities upon arrival.
