Reduced Hours and New Access Roads Mark Massive August 31 Class Return
From the expanded drop-off area in Umm Al Sheif to the fresh access road serving Motor City, neighborhoods across the country are adjusting as classrooms reopen. Starting Monday, August 31, more than 1.277 million students head back to 1,180 public and private campuses nationwide for the 2026-27 academic year.
Phased Schedules and Upgraded Routes Eases the Morning Rush
Families aren’t all hitting the gates at the same moment. The Ministry of Education has set a four-day staggered start running from Monday, August 31, through Thursday, September 3. Operating on reduced hours, individual schools determine which year groups attend each day before the full timetable kicks in on Friday, September 4. Principals hold the authority to adjust year-group ordering or extend the phased start depending on site readiness.
Dubai‘s RTA has finished targeted infrastructure improvements across six school zones serving over 10 schools. Drivers will find doubled parking capacity at a school site in Umm Al Sheif alongside the new Motor City connector road. To support non-driving options, bus frequency is stepping up across 30 routes serving Al Nahda, Muhaisnah, Al Barsha, Al Quoz, Dubai Silicon Oasis, and Al Garhoud. Transport options this term include Careem School Rides, Uber Teens, BOLT School, a new Yango School Ride Pooling program in Al Barsha, and a 50 percent discount on Metro and Tram fares. RTA inspectors are also running a 30-day blitz checking safety standards across the city’s bus fleet.
The return alters routine timing for thousands of households. Federal government employees with children in primary school or higher can request up to three hours of work flexibility on their child’s first day, subject to manager approval. Parents of nursery and kindergarten children get flexible hours across the whole opening week, a policy that also applies to official parent-teacher events later in the term.
On the highways, the Ministry of Interior and the Federal Traffic Council are running their annual Accident-Free Day campaign on August 31. Motorists who register, sign the safety pledge, and avoid traffic violations or crashes throughout the day will earn a four-point reduction on their black points record.
Across the emirates, public infrastructure is ramping up to handle the volume, supported by 10,000 school buses serving 279,000 pupils in Abu Dhabi and six brand-new private schools opening in Sharjah.
