New UAE Overtaking Rules: What You Must Check Before Changing Lanes
If you drive on UAE roads, the rules around passing slow-moving traffic and switching lanes are getting a formal legal update. Under Cabinet Resolution No. 174 of 2026, which comes into effect on January 1, 2027, motorists will be held to specific legal checks before pulling out to overtake another vehicle.
The standard for passing another car focuses on clear visibility and eliminating risks to surrounding traffic before you initiate a lane change.
What Article 20 Requires Before You Overtake
Article 20 of Cabinet Resolution No. 174 of 2026 establishes explicit requirements that every driver must verify prior to passing the vehicle ahead of them.
Before making your maneuver, you must confirm that you have a completely clear view of the lane you intend to enter. The regulation strictly prohibits moving into a lane if there is any obstruction or potential danger from oncoming traffic.
Beyond checking for oncoming vehicles, motorists must also verify that the road environment ahead and behind allows for a safe manoeuvre without forcing other drivers to suddenly alter their speed or trajectory. Failing to check surroundings, neglecting to signal, or misjudging the comparative speed of both vehicles are identified as primary causes of serious road collisions.
The upcoming regulations also define six specific driving scenarios where overtaking is entirely prohibited, alongside clear obligations for drivers who are being overtaken by another vehicle.
