Fuel-Like UAE Smell Disrupts Daily Routines Across Four Emirates
Residents across at least four emirates spent a third consecutive day tracking down an unusual, kerosene-like scent hanging heavy in the air, prompting unexpected shifts in daily routines from the Barsha area in Dubai up to Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain.
Closed windows and skipped walks as heavy odours linger
The persistence of the heavy scent over multiple days caught households off guard, pushing residents to alter their normal schedules. In Dubai, resident Sarah noticed the shift immediately after picking her son up from school on Monday, when the outside air triggered immediate sneezing, runny noses, and itchy eyes for both of them. By Tuesday, the odour was just as noticeable when they moved through the Barsha area.
Other neighborhoods saw even more drastic changes to household routines. In Umm Al Quwain, Lois skipped walking her dogs entirely on Tuesday after noticing a metallic taste in her mouth, opting instead to shut all doors and windows and keep her family indoors all day. Nearby, Sharjah resident Khawla grew so concerned by the strength of the smell on Monday evening that her family checked their gas cylinder multiple times before deciding to skip cooking altogether and order food instead. Another Umm Al Quwain resident, Majid, reported developing a migraine after two days of dealing with the persistent smell.
In response to widespread social media discussion and mounting resident concerns, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment reassured the public that assessments indicate no cause for concern, noting that response teams and field monitoring remain active to reduce the odours and accelerate their dissipation. Sharjah Police similarly confirmed that the situation is under control and poses no threat to the public.
Field monitoring and investigations into the exact source of the fuel-like odours remain ongoing across the affected emirates.
